George C. Scott plays a man alone, grieving the accidental deaths of his family while retreating to an abandoned scary house, one which is full of the type of atmospheric scares modern horror movies all but abandon these days. The movie is far from perfect, but it wears its "less is more" approach like a badge of honor, and Scott carries the movie in such a way where you care about both his emotional plight and the one he faces at the hands of whatever evils want him out of the house.
Special note: This film was named by Martin Scorsese to be one of his personal top 11 favorite horror films of all time.
